Ok, I've been told many time there's no such thing as a dumb question so here goes.  What exactly is a dedicated server?  If I'm using a web host such as GoDaddy, is that a dedicated server?

A dedicated server is a server to which you are the only one that has access to the files, and you control the contents of the entire server.  You are not sharing space with anyone else, nor can anyone else get to your data.  A web host like GoDaddy is more like a VPS that anything else, and I do not think they offer dedicated hosting at this time.

A dedicated server is a must if you want more resources than what is offered by a shared hosting account, or even if you want to run an application which cannot be run on it.

a dedicated server is when you use a server just for one purpose and all of their resources are just for you, what you have i thnk that it would be more like a managed server

A dedicated server typically is a server that is unmanaged by the provider.  This means that you can install anything you want in it.  The downfalls of this are that your I.P. addresses will not resolve unless you tell your provider what to point them at.

Soooo.  Most providers get around this by offering what is called a Dynamic Dedicated Server.  This typically comes with a control panel.  The reasons for this are many but lie manyly within i.p address resolution and easy of upgrade from a V.P.S. to a D.D.S.

Hello,

When it comes to hosting a website there are lots of considerations to be made. The type of website (or sites) you want to host and the scale at which you wish to grow are some common factors that tend to help determine just what kind of hosting is needed. Most of the time if you want to run a business whether e-commerce or otherwise, dedicated server hosting has its advantages. However in order to determine whether or not dedicated server hosting is for you, it’s a good idea to get an understanding of what it really is.

Thanks,
